The Namaste Care Project

Namaste Care Techniques

At Beaumont Manor, we recognise that all our residents are unique and everyone has their own individual characteristics, responses, feelings, thoughts, beliefs and experiences. By working and aiding our residents in this way we support their sense of themselves and by embedding person-centred care into everything we do we support our residents to maintain their identity and truly recognise the individual.  Recently our staff have undertaken Namaste Care programme training.

Namaste is motivated by the intention to ‘honour the spirit within’ the person with dementia at the stage when they no longer are able to communicate all their thoughts and feelings. Namaste could also be described as ‘The loving touch Approach’. Simply Namaste is hand/foot massage with a difference. With research showing that gentle touch can decrease pain and agitation, and it supports communication and connection.

In correlation with Namaste, Beaumont Manor Care Home includes all the senses, and our sessions include light stimulation using our multi-sensory equipment, we organise fully immersive experiences for example, a beach experience which includes the sound of the sea lapping on the shore, the smell of the seawater, the feel of sand on the feet, encompassing Namaste hand massage and not forgetting the ice cream experience.

Another example of how we have used the Namaste principles with our residents is by combining a story, or a song alongside the hand/foot massage. Our multi-sensory room and our Namaste programme have engaged residents who may have been resistant to partaking in activities in the past. Our home values many therapeutic interventions which also include Doll Therapy, Reminiscent therapy, Pet Therapy and Music Therapy. We pride ourselves on being a progressive home and finding new ways to support our residents living with dementia.

The Benefits To Our Residents

Due to the benefits that can come from Namaste Care, we're hosting regular sessions with our residents in our Sensory Room here at Beaumont Manor Care Home.

For residents living with dementia, the familiar scents, sounds, and tactile objects found in the sensory room can trigger powerful memories from the past. These moments of reminiscence often bring a sense of comfort and happiness, alleviating confusion and reinforcing a strong sense of identity.

The Namaste care project improves residents’ quality of life through personal, sensory moments that bring comfort and pleasure by engaging touch, sight, sound and taste. Being in relaxed and calming environments can support people living with dementia, reducing feelings of agitation or distress. And in some cases, it could even lessen the need for medication.
